APPEARANCE

Usually dressed in cloaks, Lauralae stands at about five foot two, seemingly pale and sunken at all times. She's a touch edgy and seems to frighten at the slightest noise and often smells of herbs with an odd, coppery aftertaste about her. Her clothing is plain and simple and the best items she owns are the boots on her feet.

SKILLS

  • MEDICINE MAKING Years in the wilderness using her own blood and some teaching from Myr before she died means that she has learned a little about how best to use herbs to treat wounds and injuries.

  • SURVIVAL SKILLS Tied in with her knowledge of the wilderness is the knowledge of how to hunt. She's good at slinking into the shadows and tracking and has some survival skills, mostly for feeding herself.

  • POISON MAKING Lauralae's racial trait means that she is somewhat more adept with the creation of poisons. Her venomous trait means that this is something she is good at it, but it's not something she does often.

  • ABILITIES

  • BLOOD MAGIC Her specialised skill and the thing she is most proficient in: she uses it for most of her magical use and uses her own blood as much as she can.

  • WILD MAGIC Years in the wild have Lauralae learning a little about wild magic, with a focus on earth and shadow magic. She's not particularly skilled at it in comparison to her blood magic skills - that's where her true focus and proficiency lies - but she is learning as she goes.

  • DHAMPIR ENDURANCE Being a dhampir means that Lauralae has increased endurance and survival skills. While she is more inclined to give into her dhampir side (she had very few qualms about drinking blood, even if she might not kill them) she does not do it publicly - mostly because she is not often in public.


  • PERSONALITY
    + DETERMINATION When Lauralae wants to do something she will do it. She is determined to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, no matter the cost to herself. It means she will do whatever she can to work towards her goal, even if they're often minimal; she still seeks vengeance on Aramas she is unsure if he is alive or not, which is the only thing stopping her now. She has that intensity about her that makes it obvious just how much she wants things and that shows her determination.

    + DEDICATION Once her devotion is earned she is an intensely loyal companion. The people she has been loyal to in life (Myr, Usir) are still the people she is most devoted to now and she would do anything for their memory. It takes a huge amount to earn her trust and her faith in you as a person, but once its there it is something she will not forget easily. There are few people she trusts and because of that she is fierce and consuming in it.

    + INTELLIGENCE Lauralae has a sharp mind that is borne of both a long life and her own personal experimentation. When she puts her mind to something she will do whatever it takes to make sure that she can get it: it's what happened with her study of magic, her study of the Gods and her personal interest in medicine and poison making. It's also what helped her avoid people for long enough to not get captured until right at the end: she picked up survival skills quite quickly.

    + KINDNESS Deep down, she does have a very kind, soft soul. Lauralae comes across as a very feral being, due to her isolation and her distrust of people, but she does have a wealth of kindness. This is mostly directed to people who are unable to take care of themselves (young children, especially orphans, and sometimes other dhampir). It's not something that is inherently obvious about her because she keeps herself distant and away from other people.

    + COURAGEOUS While she might not admit it to herself, Lauralae is very brave deep down. She struck out on her own after losing her mother figure and has managed to survive alone, isolated from the world. She is more than willing to put herself in danger to survive and she's quick to do what it takes to get out of it. She's also brave in the sense that she uses herself, rather than others, for her blood magic: it would be easy to use her nature as an excuse, but she doesn't.

    - DISTRUSTFUL Thanks to her past and background, Lauralae does not trust very easily. She does not like strangers and does not react well to them, which can sometimes put her on edge with other people. The last remains of any trust she had in people was taken from her – and while it might have been unjust for Lauralae to pain the entire world with the brush of the actions of a scant few it is impossible for her to deny that every interaction she has had has left her with nothing but pain. Turning away from them seemed to be the best and only option. Having hands that, even now, curse and burn people only made this choice all the more obvious to her.

    - INDEPENDENCE Lauralae's desire to take care of herself has often gotten her into some trouble. Linked to her distrust of people, she turns away from others and refuses to let them near her, which means she is isolated from the rest of the world. It also means that should something happen to her there is no one to help her or take care of her and no one that she might trust to make sure that she is able to survive, especially when she lays the blame on her own nature.

    - DISILLUSIONED Lauralae's faith in people and most organised religions and groups has been broken due to their treatment of her and society's view of her and her heritage, something she did not have control over. Everything she has experienced since she left has done nothing more than add weight and strength to the pillar of her independence and, now that she has grown, she refuses to allow herself to lean on anyone else. To do so would be to give them too much power over her and she refuses that; she refuses to let anyone have any kind of sway over her nature of her heart.

    - DANGEROUS Isolation has turned Lauralae into something dangerous and feral, more of an animal than a person at times. While she doesn't often give into her nature as a dhampir and allow herself to lose any kind of control, there's no denying just how dangerous and threatening she is. She doesn't try to hide it as she sees no reason to - what's the point when people are going to judge you anyway? It makes her quick to defend herself and quick to action.

    - FEARFUL The trouble with the person she is becoming, however, is that Lauralae is terrified of herself. Becoming stronger and allowing her power grow, to draw on her energy, to strengthen what was inside of her, is leaving her terrified of what is to come. She fears losing control, she fears losing herself to the power inside of her and she is terrified that there might come a time she won't be able to step back from the edge and will end up destroying herself.
    KEY EVENTS IN GAME HISTORY
    - Lauralae was born to parents who didn't know they had the blood in their family, so having a baby with weird red eyes terrified them. They abandoned her to a temple in Thalassa, where she grew up there. She was particularly close to one of the people who helped take care of her, a woman called Myr, who was somewhat like a mother to her considering she didn't have her own parents to fall back on. She was never open about her heritage but she didn't see much point in attempting to hide it, as this is before she got involved in any kind of magic.

    - A while later, Lauralae met a man named Aramas who she fell in love with. She had been able to hide her heritage from him for a long while, but one evening when they were alone her eyes flashed red and he recognised her for what she was. Not taking it out on her, he fled to the temple where he knew she had been raised and killed the 'mother' who had tended to Lauralae instead, assassinating Myr with poison.

    - This is what drives Lauralae into something of a huge manic spiral; she ends up fleeing from the temple she's grown up in (where she was probably on the path to becoming a priest to Usir, the God she had appropriately devoted herself to) and began wandering around in the wilderness for a long time. It's here that she starts to develop her wild magic but eventually turns to her own hazardous version of blood magic, using her own blood as a vessel rather than someone else's.

    - Throughout this time she is still devoted to Usir and frequently emerges from the forest to worship him. She becomes somewhat known as a devotee, but a wild one, giving herself to nature to honour him or some such. The truth is, of course, that she is nervous, awkward and dangerous, unsure how to act around people and distrusting them, but it comes across as a manic focussed priest rather than anything else.

    - Finally, she was captured during the war as a wild-esque dhampir prisoner, which is how she ended up on the battlefield. This is what eventually lead to her death.
